Is there such a place call hell? is hell a place of eternal torment?

This place indeed is real, if given a chance no one will want to dwell here for eternity. Even though it’s blinded from our physical eye and our limited sight can’t have a glimpse of the fury of hell are all about.

Many religions do belief that hell do exist and prepare for those who’re fall short and repay their evil deeds done on earth. Even many religions do point to the existence of hell but many still ignore of the reality and still live their lives on earth as they wish. For if the existence of hell is just a myth then why not gets on with lives that each individual desire after.

The Bible stated Matthew 10:28, that hell is a place prepare for the soul of the one who’re not accepting Jesus as Lord and deliberately sin against Him. In Luke 16:19-31 about “The rich man and Lazarus”, the rich man enjoy his life on earth but go through torment (v.23, 28), agony (v.24) in hell (v.23). So if heaven is real so is hell.

How many "hells" or similar yet different tormenting place are there?

Is satan in hell now as many people tend to believe, just like how God is in Heaven? People tend to view that satan and demons are in hell tormenting the unsaved.

If no, then when a person die, the person will go to hell to be tormented forever with the other sinners? When will satan be there as he is evil and meant to be send to hell?

Is this current hell where the unsaved are, the same place where satan is destined to be thrown into at the second coming of Christ?

If this is not the same hell, do educated me on this issue. I heard of hell, hades, abyss and lake of fire from the Bible, what are all these?

Thanks for communicating and sharing your view.
In Hebrew the word hell is "Sheol" in Greek it's called "Hades". Many term do used beside hell and they're grave, abyss and lake of fire.
Hell do exist and be prepare for the unbelievers, sinners, fallen angels and Satan alike.
In any case, the OT clearly teaches that there is judgment for the unsaved after this life and that this judgment continues over and extended period of time, which is hell.
The NT confirm this as the unsaved are viewed as still existing at the great white throne, some having in hades for thousands of years, but are cast into the lake of fire at that time (judgment), which will be for eternity (Rev. 20:14).
By time Satan, sinners and evil spirits alike will be shut in the lake of fire and be tormented forever and ever.

Hi Jerome,
Thanks for your sharing. I never doubt the existing of hell. The scripture has been quite clear on it. God is love but in His attributes, He is also Just. My question is the issue on eternity condemnation. Could a loving God condemns a soul to eternity torment; for just being an unrepented heart while living on earth for just 80 years of age? Would that not be cruel of Him in the sense of 80 years comparing to eternity condemnation?

Hey, freddie
I think you have raised up a very important question. How would God allow a person to be punished eternity for the sins he or she commits in his or her life time on earth? (our rational mind is always trying to find a balance or an equation between this eternity and life on earth)
in some sense, we can think that God is cruel and contradicts Himself for He proclaimed that His unfailing and unending for us.
how to hold the tension between justice and love is indeed a challenge and hard us to use our finite mind to comprehend.

Thanks Mun Chung,
Indeed it's out of our finite mind to comprehend what God is going to do. If God punishment upon the sinners and send them to eternal punishment seem unjustifiable compare to their limited lifetime spend on earth.
Then wouldn't it will be worst for those saints who're living righteously spending eternity in heaven with those who carelessly live their lives without the fear and reverence for God.
I belief that God will judge accordingly with fairness and taking everything accountable for what we have done on earth with detail.

Hi Jerome... I understood that God is both the God of kindness and the God of wrath. Grace is the extravagant love and kindness God chose to lavish on us through His Son. It is when men rejected His kindness that it results in eternal punishment. Likewise those who had responded positively to His kindness escape His wrath and enjoy life eternal. In either case, God is just in His judgement. Perhaps why we find it difficult to accept the idea of eternal punishment is because we failed to see in God's righteous judgement the aspect of severity. It is wisdom to behold both the 'kindness' and 'severity' of God (Rom. 11: 22).

Hi Jerome,
What kind of sin can cause a Christian go to hell? We serve a God who is just then it seems so unfair due to some sin we are send to hell.

hey, Eunice
Personally, i think that all sins lead to hell. so when a christian sinned against God, we need to ask God for forgiveness and repent. God is full of love and justice. certainly God cannot overlook sin. hence judgment is inevitable.

jeromeliew said...

To Eunice,
All Sins lead to death (Rom 5:12, 6:23) scripture already stated clearly that there is no sins which is escapade from the punishment of God.
But then God is gracious towards us by sending his beloved Son to save, cleanse and redeem us from the penalty of sin. So if we're in Christ Jesus we will be saved and redeem from the penalty of our sin which is hell (Rom 6:23).
God is not so wicked that He don't give us an alternative that all are destined to hell, His desires is that all be saved 1 Timothy 1:3-4.
C.S Lewis stated that the door of hell is locked from the inside.

Hi Jerome and Mun Chung,

Yes, all sin leads to hell I am very aware of it just testing to see how you answer. Thank you.

Hi all!
Jerome is covering the same issue as I am in my blog. I think a good point that Andrew brought up is regarding the aspect of severity of God's judgment.

Mun Chung mentioned that it is a challenge for the finite mind to comprehend the tension of justice and love.

Many of us feel that eternal punishment is too severe a punishment for sin. I believe that is the problem. We look at it with a sympathetic view toward humans. But if we consider God's point of view, committing sin against Him is something far more severe than the eternal punishment.

Therefore, for Him to even offer us an alternative is evident of the severity of His kindness.

Dear Jerome
The bible is quite certain of the existence of hell, and you've highlighted the scriptures to prove it.But how do you explain the verse in Revelation 20:14 that says hell and death were cast into the lake of fire.If hell is cast into the lake of fire than hell is not eternal as you say.

Hi Jerome,
I shared with Donny in his comments between him and the "learner" on similar topic as yours; their theological perspectives on eternal torments or annihilation; whereby some evangelical scholars believed. Could you comment your stand on the issue? If God in His attributes; of being Loving and at the same time He is JUST; will God actually distinguish the soul (annihilation) - is that what it means in Matt.10:28?

Hi Dohnie,
I do agreed of what you said, the severity of God's judgment upon sinners do affect our perception of the nature of God. But the severity of His' love upon us by sending Jesus to bear our sins is too much for us to comprehend by our finite mind. The pain and humiliation of Jesus on the road to Calvary and His crucification at the cross shows the overwhelming of His' love for us. God's delight that no one should perish but all to receive salvation and end up in heaven.
God is love and in His love is justice and righteousness.
The weaknesses of men is evidence when we look at it in a sympathetic feeling.

Thanks Raymond for your insight,
The verse in Revelation 20:14 that says hell and death were cast into the lake of fire.
From this text it's sure that hell only exist for a limited period of time. It's clearly stated that there is judgment for the unsaved after this life and that this judgment continues over an extended period of time. Till the appearance of the Great White Throne Judgment where some having been in hades (hell) for thousands of years face judgment and cast into the lake of fire for eternity.
Thanks.

Hi Freddie,
This blog can help us to share our views especially on the topic of eternal punishment of annihilation.
You're asking me to make my stand right? There are two schools which have their own way of interpretation about this matters. God will not contradict himself with His word, it's the interpretation of men that create confusion.
Looking at the given text in Matthew 10:28 the word 'destroy' probably give you the view about annihilation, remember there's much more bible verses which point to eternal punishment also.
I belief that they will be eternal torment/punishment awaits those who're unbelief. Those who're in hell will be torture till the coming of Christ for the Great white Throne judgment and be sent to eternal torments in the lake of fire for eternity.
Some may not agreed with my view, but is alright. For Hell, it's an eternal torment or complete annihilation have been an ongoing debate.
Thanks.

Thanks for the technical explanation about the place of torment called hell.
"The emphasis Christians place on the traditional Christian doctrines of hell...inhibits believers from living effective lives of service in this world," according Emergent Church leader Brian McLaren. Any comments?

hi Jerome,

After all the teaching and talk on the reality of hell, how many Chritian take it seriously. do they know that hell is a place of eternal torment?

jeromeliew said...

To Eunice,
I do so belief Christian will not take it lightly or deny of its existence. But then due to the busyness and comfort or their lives, many choose to ignore it altogether and putting it down in their list of priorities.
Probably till the day of old, dying or seeing someone pass away will recall them of their reality of death and hell awaits before them.
